FED 1 CAMERAS

None of these cameras have lugs to mount a strap.

The pre-war cameras were not strictly Leica Thread Mount(LTM). LTM is 39mmx26 turns/inch whitworth while these pre war FEDs were 39mmX26 turns/mm which is slightly different.

FED-1(a)(1)

This is a black and chrome camera with rounded ends. The finish is shiny chrome and a very lightly pebbled leather like finish. The center screw for the top deck is half covered by the lens mount. The range finder housing has two round, black painted, brass windows front and rear. The left front window is different from the right window and the rear windows are different still. These are on each side of a rectangular viewfinder window. The frame for the viewfinder window has an interesting shape. The right side of the window frame is lower and has a screw in the center. There is a depression for the accessory shoe but no shoe is mounted. The Shutter crate is also attached to the body by a screw inside the bottom. The base plate of this camera has a film guide attached with 2 screws. The indicator arrow for the shutter speeds is at an angle on the corner of the raised area. The shutter speed setting dial is in a depression in the top deck. The collar around the shutter release is straight knurled vertically and the shutter release is a smooth and hemispherical shiny chrome button. The shutter speeds are Z,20,30,60,100,200,and 500. On the top deck surrounding the rewind knob are three screw heads. The camera has a removable bottom for film loading and requires a longer than normal film leader. This camera has the type 1 engraving.

The lenses for this camera focus to less than 1 meter but are engraved to only one meter. These lenses have only one stop screw and it is fatter than later models. The infinity stop is at 10 to 11 o'clock. The lens cam is pointed although with a radiused tip. There are two other features that make this camera unique. The first feature is that there is an adjustment hole in the back of the camera and the film pressure plate. This hole is filled with a brass plug in the middle of the back. the second feature is that all these cameras show evidences of hand work. They all show file or other tool marks and each is slightly different in very small details.

The eveready case for this camera has one snap and is made of very fine grain brown leather with FED (in Cyrillic block letters) embossed on the lens cover. The Snap has one large star centered in a round pebbled area surrounded with 4 small stars

There are several different finishes on this camera. They were produced as the factory experimented with finishes. The camera pictured below has what is described as the galvanized pail finish.. This camera has a very rare variation that has a totally black finish.

Caution:
When changing shutter speeds, to prevent damage to the camera, the shutter must be wound first, only then can you change the speeds.

This camera has had four obvious changes. The first change is that an accessory shoe with a small front prong has been added and second the view finder frame is now rectangular. These cameras have a different chrome finish, they appear to have been sandblasted and then chromed with a very matte finish. The rangefinder windows are chromed in this model and not made of brass. The hole and plug are gone from the back but the pressure plate still has the hole. The infinity lock for the lens is now at 9 o'clock. The camera has a removable bottom for film loading and requires a longer than normal film leader. The eveready case for this camera has one snap and is made of brown leather with FED (in Cyrillic block letters) embossed on the lens cover.

FED-1(d)

This is the last pre-war model with engraving type 3.. The three screw heads surrounding the rewind knob are gone from the top deck. The shutter release is now flat with circular engraving on top and the ring around the shutter release is now cross knurled. The central screw on the front of the body is now fully exposed and the lens focuses to infinity at 8 o'clock. There is another change on this model but it can only be determined by looking at an older camera. The round stud for the bottom cover has been enlarged. This model can be found with both the "sandblasted" finish of the previous model and with a much smoother finish. The camera has a removable bottom for film loading and requires a longer than normal film leader.

I have one of these with the serial number 2462 which is obviously from the first year of production. We think that the camera was returned to the factory for repair and it was easier to just engrave a new camera than to repair the original.

FED-1(e)

There is come confusion about this model. Some people believe it to be the last prewar model. I think that they were made from parts rescued by the evacuation from the FED plant and are really the first postwar model. This model is also where the lens mounts changed some have the old pitch and some are true LTM. Some of the cameras were also made with 1000 speed(very rare).
The only difference is that the finish is not as good and the engraving is different. This is the scarcest standard model with the accessory shoe. The camera has a removable bottom for film loading and requires a longer than normal film leader.

FED-1(d) RED BANNER OF LABOR

This camera may actually be the original and not the variation, unfortunately there is no documentation to determine which is older. The variations are the engraving and what appears to be a leather covering. The serial numbers of the 2 known examples start with 200. This camera also has the older lens with infinity at 9 o'clock and the straight knurled cable release ring. The camera has a removable bottom for film loading and requires a longer than normal film leader. FED-1(g)

This is the last model and the only real change was the engraving where only the stylized FED remains. This camera tends to be better made than the rest of the standard models. This camera also introduced the new 50mm F3.5 lens with the following apertures: 3.5,4,5.6,8,11 and 16. The last of these cameras had their serial numbers engraved on the back to the right of the viewfinder window. The camera has a removable bottom for film loading and requires a longer than normal film leader.

There is a very rare commerative version celebrating 300 years of the Ukraines union with Russia. This is the only FED-1 commerative.
