Kiev Automat Family

Kiev-10

This is one of the earliest if not the earliest production semi-automatic single lens reflex cameras in the world. The Kiev-10 was produced from 1965 to 1974. The first thing that you notice about the Kiev-10 is the huge Photo cell above the lens that is shaped like a pyramid with the top cut off. All controls on the Kiev-10 are on the raised lens mount area. Kiev -10 is engraved ion the upper left corner in Cyrillic block letters. To the left of the lens is a small chromed button for the lens release and in the lower right corner is the flash contact. To the immediate right of the lens on the side of the raised area is a button to set the f stops or automatic. Above the lens are four horizontal black lines. The shutter release is a large black plastic knob that has a socket for a cable release in the upper right corner. On the upper right deck is the word "automat" in Cyrillic block letters, a film plane indicator and a small rectangular film counter window. On the upper left deck is the shutter speed control with the film setting dial in the center. The shutter for this camera is a metal fan type shutter. It has film speeds of 1000,500,125,60,30,15,8,4,2 and B. The serial number is on the left of the black plastic viewfinder window and to the right, set into the body, is the black plastic tipped film advance lever. On the bottom chrome strip is "Made in USSR" engraved in Cyrillic block letters. The rear door is hinged on the right side. The rear door is hinged on the right side. The bottom of the camera has a quarter inch tripod bushing and the rewind button. There is a chrome folding rewind crank that covers the back release. These cameras are uncommon and rare in excellent condition. The case for this camera is a soft black leather case with one snap and no markings.

Kiev-15

The second generation of the Soviet automated camera is the Kiev-15. Although functionally the same as the Kiev-10 the camera has been redesigned. The Kiev-15 was produced from 1974. The raised area of the front has the lens mount in the center and "TEE" in the upper right corner. The "TEE" signifies Through The Lens(TTL) metering and the model with English engraving is engraved "TTL". On the upper left corner is a chromed dial to set automatic or f stops. On the bottom right is a flash socket. The Prism has a name plate with "KIEV-15" engraved in Cyrillic block letters. On top of the prism is a hot shoe for flash. On the right side of the top deck is a rectangular film counter window and a film plane indicator engraving. The shutter release, which is shaped like a mushroom and internally threaded for a cable release is also here. The last thing on the right deck is a black plastic tipped film advance. The left top deck has a meter switch, a small black button and the shutter speed dial. The meter switch turns the meter on and off, since this camera has a battery powered metering system. The function of the little black button remains a mystery as whatever it does is not apparent. The shutter is of the same type as the Kiev-10 with no change in speeds. In the back left corner is a small window with no discernible function. The serial number is engraved on the right of the black plastic viewfinder window along with a Kiev symbol. The rear door is hinged on the right side. The rear door is hinged on the right side. The bottom of the camera has a back release on the left next to a rewind crank. There is a quarter inch tripod bushing and on the right side a rewind button and battery compartment. This camera has a brown leather case with two snaps with a chrome strip over the top and around the lens cover. It has KIEV in Cyrillic block letters embossed on the lens cover.
